Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.

Police report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.

The substance had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then found multiple other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Police say early analysis indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.

City officials said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.

A high-ranking official commented the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.

"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant targeting residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
