Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company Unilever blocked the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed that he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual collection showcasing causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed that the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.
âI'm accomplishing what they couldn't,â Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. âI'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.â
The watermelon has become an emblem for solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, that closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner â the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created in 2016 to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was compromised after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
âMy conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
- Corporate owner restrictions regarding political advocacy
- Personal product development from company founders
- The fruit-based product as political symbol
