Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
