Finally Addressing the Modding Gap: The Game's New Quest Fixes an Oversight
The space ninja adventure known as Warframe, an experience where you might encounter bizarre cosmic entities and drive a motorcycle in the year 1999, has unveiled a new update. This latest expansion highlights the creative flair that has become synonymous with Warframe in the past few seasons.
The new content, released on Wednesday, adds a new mushroom-themed warframe that performs a unique animation, along with a whole new explorable fungal area. However, it also revisits core concepts, with another quest designed to making sure this complicated, expansive long-running online game makes sense to new players.
The Arrival of "The Teacher"
Named âThe Teacher,â this is the highly anticipated mission that trains Warframe players on how to use one of the game's fundamental yet complex systems: the mod system.
In Warframe, modifications are enhancements that can be added to your character or your weapons to improve their stats. They range from the straightforward (increase damage or speed up reload rate) to the incredibly intricate. Content creators often craft hour-long videos about optimized loadouts that use synergistic enhancements to create devastating effects.
âI think a lot of people were maybe getting into the early game, seeing mods, not really understanding it,â said a lead narrative designer. âI think it was really important, upon completing the mission, for players to think, âWow, modding is interesting. I'd like to experiment further.ââ
A Collaborative Effort
âThe Teacherâ was created through a partnership between the core team, who handled the story elements, and an external team, who crafted the gameplay, which will be introduced to new players.
In the quest, the player is asked to retrieve a component for their ship, but theyâre interrupted by a menacing, powerful warrior called Teshin, who takes away the playerâs abilities and melee weapons, and compels them to use the mod system to effectively show its potential.
Several developers were longtime players, but others had never played before, according to a principal games designer. This fresh viewpoint that proved critical.
âOur initial step involved observing new players and have them experience the introduction and document extensively on everywhere they fell out,â the designer said. Introductory tutorials introduced players to modding. But the team noted that they didnât work on everyone.
âSome people didn't see basic instructions where the game highlights it saying put the mod in the slot,â he said.
Filling a Significant Gap
Warframeâs mods allow players to create stupidly powerful synergies that turn the screen into a blitz of numbers. But "The Teacher" focuses on different aspects. There will be some long-time players who desire more advanced content, like optimizing for endgame challenges. But it became clear that the mission addresses a genuine oversight for newcomers â and that doing so isnât as simple as it looks.
âNumerous subtle adjustments and background details there to just demonstrate the possibilities rather than tell you,â the designer said. For example, one of the mission's objectives is to show how mods can create powerful elemental status effects; in this case, Magnetic damage that eats chunks out of enemy shields.
âWe had to change the weapon to be a rapid-fire gun, because it better demonstrates the effect frequency,â the designer said. âHowever, the goal isn't to say to people, 'with a basic modification, you only got a few percentage chance to proc an elemental effect.' How can you teach this mechanic effectively?â
Veterans will instinctively look for that kind of weapon effect and understand how it works, but new players have to be taught to notice these details.
âThis type of design work that we previously focused on just because our priorities lay elsewhere,â said a narrative lead. âHowever, this oversight meant that players weren't properly taught the modding system.â
Significant Investment
âA tremendous amount of work is required for just making a seemingly straightforward quest that â frankly â you can complete quickly,â said the designer. âYet it represents extensive development for loads of people.â
The designer was visibly glowing with excitement over contributing to a beloved title â and to craft a mission for one of his favorite characters.
âI'm a huge fan of Teshin,â he said. âHe embodies everything my younger self found awesome.â
Improving the New Player Experience
In the decade-plus since launch, Warframe has been in a consistent battle with its own new user introduction. There are many intricate mechanics that players can ignore initially â and wonât even have access to until hours into the game. And others, like modding, that scale in complexity depending on your level of engagement. An update earlier this year streamlined the early game so that players could reach Warframeâs mind-bending plot developments with less time on the grind up front.
With âThe Teacher,â itâs clear that the developers are reinforcing their dedication to make sure Warframeâs initial hours doesnât stay locked in 2013. Beginners can find their way â even if they miss the menu prompts.
