Senegal's Rising Star Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
As I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. âI only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,â states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and GĂ©nĂ©ration Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. âHe was against me playing soccer but itâs because he had never watched me,â explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on âone beautiful day,â he received his fatherâs blessing to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
However, the famed academy â the institution that produced talents including Sadio ManĂ©, Papiss CissĂ© and IsmaĂŻla Sarr â saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were âastonishedâ to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. âThey took me directly to the training centre. They didnât want me from returning home,â Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, âa year to remember,â which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and earning best player.
A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating ManĂ©. âSettling in wasn't a challenge,â states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.
Influences and Playing Style
Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's âhumilityâ and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. âIt is a habit that is following me!â he quips.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. âAs soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,â Camara noted.
Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. âWe are the favourites â we canât hide from that. After defeating England in their own countryâŠ,â he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. âI am very comfortable here,â he insists. He is frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.
âWe are the favourites â that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley⊠it instills belief.â
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
