Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not seeking a return to football management, noting that it would be difficult to match the special mission he felt as the national team coach.

The former coach indicated his intention to dedicate his efforts toward supporting young people and addressing what he called a widespread pessimistic outlook presently existing in the country.

Embracing Different Paths Away from Football

Speaking on air, Southgate was asked about rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the English football and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he responded. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Positive Examples

Ahead of the launch of his forthcoming publication, his new work on leadership, the author stated that he is deeply committed about providing role models for young people, utilizing insights from his tenure as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

The leader maintains that his time managing the squad, during which the team evolved from being widely disliked to widely supported, holds general lessons.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Parenting and Influencing Youth

Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach commented: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He continued: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Unity Over Division

He stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often highlights division.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he commented. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

His new release, titled Dear England, is set to offer additional perspectives on management and country pride inspired by his notable time in football.
