A confidential source has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities abandoned classified technology allowing Afghanistan's rulers to identify local individuals who worked with allied troops.

Data Breach Puts Thousands at Risk

The source, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were instructed to relocate and alter their phone numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Members of Parliament are investigating the UK government's handling of a serious breach of confidential data involving approximately 19k Afghans who had applied to move to the United Kingdom to escape the regime.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

An electronic document with their personal data, comprising identities, contact details and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by an official employed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The breach came to light in late 2023, when the names of several individuals who had applied to move to Britain appeared on Facebook.

Initial findings submitted to the committee suggested that no fewer than forty-nine kin and co-workers of people concerned by the incident had been executed.

A legal restriction about the incident was implemented in August 2023 and prevented relevant facts regarding the matter from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she was working with informed individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate when possible and switched their contact details. Those were the two main details that, should militant forces obtained this information, would lead to them being traced,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The source disputed that internal investigation carried out by a retired civil servant had been mistaken to state that the possession of the records by the Taliban was “not significantly alter current risk levels”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are not confronting the Taliban; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to past work history.”

The source explained horrific treatment experienced by concerned people, including electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of four-year-old children who have had limbs fractured to pressure households to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
