Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
