The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.

However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
