NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, did not confirm this decision right away following his triumph in November.

"The choice was based on the security of my family and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its abundance of immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will forever remain a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

But his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he hails from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his previous Astoria digs.

With its butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
