The Two Fatalities Identified in the Ivy League School Incident as Authorities Press On With Search for Gunman.

Both young individuals who were killed in the weekend's mass shooting on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their shooter continued following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies publicly, stating: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her family and friends, especially her parents.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other person killed was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his initial year at the Ivy League university, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a tribute.

What Happened

Nine more persons were injured in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a search at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was being released.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate fresh anxiety for our community”.

The assailant discharged a weapon inside a room in the building on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a authority told the news agency.

Police that entered the lodging recovered two firearms and magazines when the person of interest was taken into custody, the news agency reported.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, one pupil was allowed to go home, stated the university president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, officials reported on Sunday.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a message. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, friends, and peers and lament the passing of his promising future.”
